I Need My Xanax. When Can I Get Them Refilled?

I get #90 Xanax (generic: alprazolam) a month, with dosing 3 times daily. Last month had 31 days in it. When is the next time I can pick up my refill?

When can you pick up your RX? It depends...
by: David

It depends. Are you using any prescription insurance? If you are using insurance, then your next refill would be fillable when they tell you you can get it. You can ask your pharmacy to try to refill the xanax and they will be able to tell you the exact date when you can pick it up. The insurance company calls the shots when you have coverage. However, an insurance company doesn't want you to run out of your med either. As long as you are taking your prescribed amount each day, you should have a window of a few days before you would be running out of it. A number of major insurance companies will let you refill your prescription up to a week in advance for a 30-day RX. Usually once 75% of your medication is used up, the major companies allow for a refill to be processed and covered.

Again, as long as you are taking the prescribed amount each day, you should have no problem with getting a refill before you run out. If there has been an increase of the frequency that you take it each day, or an increase in the dosage of the medication, than your pharmacy may be able to request a refill too soon override and either get the new frequency or dose filled or get the date the new rx can be filled.

If you are not using any insurance, then it is up to the pharmacists discretion as to when you can next get a refill. In this situation, if you are not using the insurance, it is the pharmacist's license on the line. If they allow you to get the rx really early, and something bad were to happen, such as an overdose, they could potentially be held liable and could have their license to practice pharmacy revoked.
