Strange DEA Coding on Prescription Bottle
by: Anonymous

My husband has a prescription drug for high blood pressure that has no NDC number but a DEA number.
Searching the string for this number produces no results.

What is going on?

DEA # Answer
by: David Shedd

There is no federal law which requires a DEA number on the front of a prescription.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (website: www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov) does require that a DEA registration number be on all controlled drug prescriptions (CII-CV's.)

The following is a quote from the
DEA Diversion Control website Pharmacist Manual:

"A prescription for a controlled substance must be dated and signed on the date when issued. The prescription must include the patient?s full name and address, and the practitioner?s full name, address, and DEA registration number."
