I have 42 pills. It is prescribed to take 1 every 8 hours as needed. How many days supply is this?

42 pills, divided by 3 = 14.

We get 3 as a divisor because there are 3 increments of every 8 hours in every 24 hour period, so at that rate, it is three pills per day. While this is an as-needed prescription/sig, we calculate the days supply based on the assumption that you can take up to 3 pills as needed every day.

42 pills, divided by 3 pills per day, equals a total days supply of 14.
