Is it a HIPAA violation if a pharmacist says what you are taking very loud so others can hear what you are taking?

Speak up for yourself
by: David

Perhaps if you speak with the pharmacy manager, and request that the store staff speak or communicate in ways that are more confidential? That's a suggestion. You always have the right and the option to find another pharmacy to do business with. Especially if you speak with a manager and the parties involved in this and they do not do well to honor your request.
Depending on the store and if it is a chain pharmacy or an independent or somewhere in between that, if taking my advice doesn't work, you can ask to talk with a district pharmacy manager, and perhaps they can address your issue.

Ultimately, you may need to choose to find a new pharmacy that appropriately serves your need for confidentiality and privacy.

Best of Luck in your endeavor to do this!

What Privacy!
by: Anonymous

The pharmacist and the clerk asking your name and birthdate out loud, 2 to 3 times, and say that this is OK because the pharmacy board made this rule to ensure they give out the meds to the right person.
BS!!! What's private about shouting my and birthdate across the room?!! why can't you enter it on a screen, write it down, or text it, especially when there are others close by? That may be all a crook needs to verify my identity, DAH!!

Agree!

The cashier at the pharmacy proceeded to speak loudly about the prescription. Began to make comments about what I was purchasing which had a relation to my prescription. This is not an isolated incident as she has been the cashier for my previous purchases at the pharmacy. I will be calling their store and corporate offices to provide feedback.

I sure as heck think so!

Just had this happen to me. After I had to give her my name and birthdate, she's like, "OKAY, I HAVE YOUR XXXXXXXXXX RIGHT HERE!" So now everyone knows what my name is, how old I am, and what meds I'm on. Super. This is what "privacy" feels like, huh?
