A Question about HIPPA Guidelines and Leaving Messages on Answering Machines

While You Were Out...

My question is this, is it a violation of HIPAA to leave a message on the answering machine for a customer, telling them that their prescription is ready? I would just say, "Your prescription order is ready for pickup, please contact us if you have questions." on the answering machine. Is this a violation of the Act?

Re: question regarding HIPPA

After stating who I am and where I am calling from, I will then let them know they have a prescription ready. I then state that if they have any questions to feel free to give me a call back. Upon a call back your pharmacy should have some guidelines as to what questions to ask prior to releasing information. After all, you play a role as a gatekeeper for protected information. If you do not feel comfortable releasing that information over the phone, tell them or consult your pharmacist. I suppose that is kind of a textbook answer, but people are pushy and sometimes boundaries need to be set.

a question regarding HIPAA

In my experience just saying that "your prescription is ready," isn't in violation... I think only if you state something like.."Mr Jones your prescription for Viagra is ready" would be stepping into the field of HIPAA violation....Honestly if you have any doubts just ask the pharmacist they would know best.
