Can you just study on your own (for the national certification exam) and take it without having to go through an online course?

Yes, definitely! Some recommended study materials and a study strategy can be found at: Pharmacy Technician Certification Test Preparation.

On a personal note, I studied on my own for the exam and passed it. You do have to be self-motivated and disciplined though.
