Hospital Pharmacy Issues; Incorrect IV Training

My work was genius enough to give a new hire authority in the IV Room, with no prior hospital experience whatsoever.

Along with this we hired 5 new technicians (all without prior hospital experience).

As a result they were all trained by this moron who poorly trained them and would emphasize how she loved and only used 16 gauge needles.

As a result every person that goes through there uses these fat needles on everything including tiny vials that contain 1-2ml of fluid.

It drives me nuts and I cannot for the life of me find anything anywhere on the importance of selecting the right needle size in compounding IVs.

I've read through USP 797 I've been searching the internet for days obsessively. Maybe I am just nuts and its not that big of a deal but if it wasn't why would there be so many needles sizes. Grrr

Lynn, please visit IV Compounding Needles.
I have written this page, which includes information about using the right needle size, and the differences involved when selecting the most appropriate needle, considering syringe tips, considering the amount of fluid, considering the viscosity of the fluid, considering the lumen and the gauge, and also a short blurb about avoiding coring.
