Pharmacy technician

(Stoughton, MA, USA)

Good morning,
If a pharmacy technician at CVS in Massachusetts informs another person that I am not currently friends with through text messaging as well as social media Facebook Messenger that I was there to specific timing filling a specific medication and is very accurate, how do I go about filing that she violated the HIPAA law? This is very serious because this is my private information being given out to a random person in my hometown at the time and date and exact medication I filled on that date. Please advise what I need to do for the correct steps in the actions I can also take. Thanks in advance.

Hi Lisa,
The first place I would start with is informing the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy about this incident and explaining to them exactly what happened. They can investigate further into this upsetting situation. It does initially sound like a HIPPA violation, although I am sure that the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy will make a determination for sure one way or the other. You can do a google search in order to find the MA BOP website, and from there, you can find contact information for the BOP. Be sure to have all of the relevant information, such as fill date, medication name and prescription number, pharmacy, and include screenshots of the different messenger /messages if you have them as proof. The more information you can provide to the Board, the better your chances at resolving this privacy issue. If the board doesn't get you the results you want, there is always the chance that you can pursue things legally, although that can be costly and take time and energy. Best of luck with resolving this situation to your satisfaction. It sounds very upsetting, unfortunate, and very frustrating. If it happened to you, perhaps there are others who have received the same treatment at this pharmacy. Perhaps you will be not only standing up for yourself, but also standing up for others who have been mistreated by the staff at this pharmacy, who knows?

Take care, and thank you again for your question. Best of luck in your situation!
