Is DR accountable for mistake of prescribing a smaller quantity of Rx?

Is DR accountable for mistake of prescribing a smaller quantity of Rx?

How many tablets should I be prescribed for a 30-days supply? For Hydrocodone/ Acetaminophen 10mg-325mg? If I was prescribed a smaller amount is the physician accountable for the mistake? What happens if I run out too soon?

180 tabs = 30 days supply...
by: David

For an Rx with the directions "1 tab po every 4 hours prn," with a max of 6 tabs daily, we do the math. Maximum of 6 tabs X 30 days = 180 tabs for a thirty day supply.

As far as the smaller amount issue, I would call your dr's office. Maybe they don't realize they made a mistake. Or maybe they had a perfectly good reason for the smaller quantity?

Often times doctors who prescribe controlled substances require a narcotic contract with their patients. Open lines of communication are best when you are in pain, especially when there is a narcotic contract in place.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "accountable." Do you mean "at fault?" or Do you mean "is there legal recourse?"

You should be able to call or email your doctor's office to find out the reason why you were given a smaller quantity on your Rx. Resolving this issue could be as simple as that.

As far as what to do when/if you run out, again, I think you may know what I think you should do. Call your doctor. That is the quickest way to resolve this issue.

Max of 6/day X 30 days = #180
by: David

If your doctor only wants you to take a maxiumum of 6 tablets per day, and you are normally given a 30 day supply by your doctor, then:

6/day X 30 days supply = 180 tablets
