OBRA and Washington, DC

what does OBRA stand for?

Answer:

OBRA stands for the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act.

There are 2 of them in recent history:

OBRA of 1990 and OBRA of 1993.

OBRA of 1990 (as it relates to pharmacy) allowed the states the ability to establish Drug Utilization Review boards which would oversee state healthcare programs. The boards assign lists of drug classes and specific drugs contained in those classes. These tabulations defined the drugs on the list as equally effective and equally safe as the others. After a drug is on the list, it could then become a "preferred drug." These drugs are usually low-cost generics.

Among other things, OBRA of 1993 (as it relates to pharmacy) repealed the cap on Medicare taxes.
